The St. Johnsbury School is seeking applicants for paraeducators to work with preschool students (4 year olds). We have 3 preschool classrooms. St. Johnsbury School is a preschool through grade 8 public school located 4 minutes from Exit 21 on I-91. We have approximately 550 students and approximately 200 employees in the school.
The successful candidates will have experience working with and building relationships with 4 year old students. A willingness to work on teams of professionals (including classroom teachers, special educators, physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech language pathologist, behavior specialist, etc.) and with other preschool paraeducators and the ability to follow behavior and academic plans is important.
Paraeducators are required to possess, at a minimum, one of the following qualifications: an Associate’s Degree, at least 48 undergraduate college credits, or successful completion of the ParaPro Assessment or an equivalent basic skills examination. Applicants who do not hold a degree or the required 48 college credits must complete the assessment prior to beginning employment. The school offers the assessment at no charge to employees. Additionally, preschool paraeducators are required to complete the State of Vermont’s 9-hour Better Kid Care Orientation Training. The St. Johnsbury School District will cover both the cost of the training and the employee’s time required to complete it. This can be completed during employment.
The work schedule for this position is 7:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Hourly wages are determined in accordance with the Paraeducators’ Collective Bargaining Agreement and are based on both years of experience and educational attainment. The entry-level rate of pay is $18.61 per hour. Paraeducators holding an Associate’s Degree with one year of experience earn $20.30 per hour.
Paraeducators become vested in the State Municipal Pension System after five years of service. The annual work schedule consists of 175 school days and 4 professional development days.
Benefits include 8 paid holidays, 12 sick days, 2 emergency leave days, 3 personal days, and 5 bereavement days annually. The District also supports professional development by paying for up to six college tuition credits per school year.
Health insurance is provided through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont. The District contributes the first $2,200 of out-of-pocket expenses for single coverage and $4,400 for a multi-person plan, and also covers 100% of prescription drug costs. In addition, the District provides single dental coverage, life insurance, and long-term disability insurance for employees.
Employees also have access to a comprehensive Employee Wellness Program. During in-service days, the District offers half-day wellness sessions with a variety of participation options. Additional employer-paid support programs include InvestEAP, PATH, mental health resources, Employee Connect, Travel Connect, Lincoln WellnessPath, and LifeKeys.
